Did They Get it Right? – Best Original Song – Oscars 2012

DTGIR 2012

This was an ok year for songs. Being a HUGE fan of Les Miserables and think the whole soundtrack is amazing, the fact that they were able to add a great new song that fits the tone and atmosphere of the story is incredible.

Adele’s way of singing Skyfall is also great, but I must say that (to me at least), the other 3 songs nominated aren’t very memorable at all.

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

  • “Before My Time” – Chasing Ice • Music and Lyrics: J. Ralph

  • “Everybody Needs a Best Friend” – Ted • Music: Walter Murphy • Lyrics: Seth MacFarlane

  • “Pi’s Lullaby” – Life of Pi • Music: Mychael Danna • Lyrics: Bombay Jayashri

  • “Suddenly” – Les Misérables • Music: Claude-Michel Schönberg • Lyrics: Herbert Kretzmer and Alain Boublil

  • “Skyfall” – Skyfall – Music and Lyrics: Adele and Paul Epworth

Song (s) that I think should have been included in the mix: (Not sure if all really are eligible according to Oscar standards…)

  • Touch the Sky – Julie Fowlis (Brave)

  • Need Someone – Mary J. Blige (The Invisible War)

  • When Can I See You Again? – Owl City (Wreck-it Ralph)

  • Sugar Rush – AKB48 (Wreck-it Ralph)

My Rankings:

Songs

  • 5. – Before My Time
  • 4. – Pi’s Lullaby
  • 3. – Everybody Needs a Best Friend
  • 2. – Skyfall
  • 1. – Suddenly

Movies

  • 5. – Chasing Ice (Never Seen)
  • 4. – Ted (Never Seen)
  • 3. – The Life of Pi
  • 2. – Skyfall
  • 1. – Les Miserables

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Nope. I think Skyfall is a great song, but I’m a huge fan of Les Mis and think that Suddenly is slightly more deserving.

Let me know what you think about these songs!

  1. Despite not being a Bond fan I do think Adele really has the power to belt out the kind of song that goes with that kind of film so I think I am going to say I agree with this one. Les Mis unfortunately didn’t do it for me.
