Genre Guesstimation – Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s Genre has been chosen by Damien of Riley Central we will be reviewing our favorite Adventure Movies.

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of May by sending them to damienadventure@movierob.net

Try to think out of the box!

Great choice Damien!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Adventure Films…

tomb raider“This is where I start to have fun.” – Lara

Number of Times Seen – 2 (26 Jun 2001 and 2 May 2016)

Brief Synopsis – A wealthy archeologist/adventurer tries to follow the clues to stop a secret society from getting control of a device that has the power over time.

My Take on it – As a huge fan of Indiana Jones adventures, I actally looked forward to a “modern” updated version of the story and characters.

The adventure she partakes on feels like something Indy would do and the use of recent technology, transportation and even fighting techniques enhances the experience.

I still would rather see Indy chase Nazi’s, but that’s me.

I’ve never been the biggest fan pf Angelina Jolie, but she does a good job here of taking on the persona of the video game character and bringing her to life for us, chandelier dancing and all.

She also can hold her own as an action heroine and this was one of her first chances to show this to the world.

Loved watching Daniel Craig here as a very anti-Bond character because it shows how much diversity he can use when creating his characters.

The story is interesting and presented in a very fun way, but there is so much meat missing from what they could have done with the storyline and characters.

Bottom Line – Seems to be quite true to the video game, but it comes off as a lesser version of an Indiana Jones story.  Jolie is good as the title character and knows how to handle an action movie by herself.  Nice to see a pre-Bond Craig here in a role so very different from the spy we all know and love. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When Lara starts smashing the clock with a hammer, Hillary (the butler) uses a silver tray to protect his face. This is a reference to the games in which -while exploring Croft Manor- the player can shoot at the butler who then also uses the tray he’s carrying around to protect himself. (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Fun Indiana Jones type of movie, but not good enough to be a included among my favorites

Rating – Globe Worthy

  1. This was one of my favourite films as a kid! It’s nice to see someone watch it and not rip it to absolute shreds – it’s received a fair bit of stick over the years.

  2. I thought they did the best they could with this movie and am completely against trying again with another Oscar winner. I liked this just fine when I first saw it when I was 19 but it wasn’t nearly as much fun as I remembered when I rewatched it a couple of years ago.
