Genre Guesstimation – Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s Genre has been chosen by Damien of Riley Central we will be reviewing our favorite Adventure Movies.

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of May by sending them to

Try to think out of the box!

Great choice Damien!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Adventure Films…

Cradle“Yeah. I’ve got over 150 hours between flight simulation games, models. ” – Bryce

Number of Times Seen – 1 (11 Jan 2006 and 3 May 2016)

Brief Synopsis – Lara goes on another quest, this time to stop a billionaire scientist from unleashing a deadly toxin on the world that was preserved for millenia in an ancient burial place.

My Take on it – I saw this film over a decade ago and was actually quite excited to see it again because I didn’t remember it at all, but at the same time didn’t have high expectations for that very same reason.

This movie feels way too much like an attempt to capture the awe and spectacle of a James Bond adventure instead of an Indian Jones one like it should.

I’ve always liked Gerard Butler, but his character was too cliched here despite the fact that he definitely can act well and can also handle himself as a action hero.

This movie is no where near as good or even as fun as the original, but it actually is palatable as a mindless action flick.

I’m quite glad that they didn’t try to further this franchise with more films because the direction they took this just didn’t work well enough.

Bottom Line – Not nearly as good or as fun as the original. Feels too much like an attempt to create a James Bond type of adventure instead of an Indiana Jones one. Addition of Butler gets too clichéd despite his acting and action abilities.  Glad they stopped after this one because this was barely palatable, but any more probably would have continued in the downward spiral this movie started for the franchise.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Just as in the first film, there are several scenes in which the live-action Lara mimics the computer game version, in particular a scene in which she climbs around a pagoda and pole-vaults to a helicopter. She also takes a nasty fall as the animated Lara was prone to do.  (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – This is actually a pretty silly Indiana Jones type of movie, which is no where near good enough to be a included among my favorites.

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
