Did They Get it Right? – Best Original Song – Oscars 1989

DTGIR 1989

What a great way to end the decade with such great songs nominated for Best Original Song.  I have a special place in my heart for After All because it’s such a moving and emotional song, but ultimately the emergence of Disney’s Renaissance of musical movies that started with this year’s The Little Mermaid was able to clinch it.

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

  • “After All” – Chances Are • Music: Tom Snow • Lyrics: Dean Pitchford

  • “Kiss the Girl” – The Little Mermaid • Music: Alan Menkin • Lyrics: Howard Ashman

  • “I Love To See You Smile” – Parenthood • Music and Lyrics: Randy Newman

  • “The Girl Who Used To Be Me” – Shirley Valentine • Music: Marvin Hamlisch • Lyrics: Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman

  • “Under the Sea” – The Little Mermaid – Music: Alan Menken • Lyrics: Howard Ashman

Song (s) that I think should have been included in the mix: (Not sure if all really are eligible according to Oscar standards…)

  • On Our Own – Bobby Brown (Ghostbusters II)

  • Flip City – Glen Frey (Ghostbusters II)

  • Ghostbusters – Run DMC (Ghostbusters II)

  • We’re Back – Bobby Brown (Ghostbusters II)

  • Cheer Down – George Harrison (Lethal Weapon 2)

  • License to Kill – Gladys Knight (License to Kill)

  • Part of Your World – Jodi Benson (The Little Mermaid)

  • Burn On – Randy Newman (Major League)

  • Pet Semetary – The Ramones (Pet Semetary)

  • In Your Eyes – Peter Gabriel (Say Anything)

My Rankings:

  • 5. – The Girl Who Use to be Me
  • 4. – Kiss the Girl
  • 3. – I Love to See You Smile
  • 2. – After All
  • 1. – Under the Sea

  • 4. – Shirley Valentine (Never Seen)
  • 3. -After All
  • 2. – The Little Mermaid
  • 1. – Parenthood

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – yes, Under the Sea is spectacular. After All comes in a very close second because it’s so emotional

Let me know what you think about these songs!
