Did They Get it Right? – Best Original Song – Oscars 2008

DTGIR 2008

This was yet another pitiful year where they only nominated 3 songs despite many more also being deserving of nominations.

Here are the three nominees: (Winner in Bold)

  • “Down to Earth” – WALL-E • Music: Peter Gabriel and Thomas Newman • Lyrics: Peter Gabriel

  • “O… Saya” – Slumdog Millionaire • Music and Lyrics: A. R. Rahman and M.I.A.

  • “Jai Ho” – Slumdog Millionaire – Music: A. R. Rahman • Lyrics: Gulzar

Song (s) that I think should have been included in the mix: (Not sure if all really are eligible according to Oscar standards…)

  • The Wrestler – Bruce Springsteen (The Wrestler)

  • Gran Torino – Jamie Cullum (Gran Torino)

  • I Thought I Lost You – Miley Cirus (Bolt)

  • Dracula’s Lament – Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall)

My Rankings:

  • 3. – O. Saya
  • 2. – Jai-Ho
  • 1. – Down to Earth

  • 2. – Slumdog Millionaire
  • 1. – Wall-E

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Not at all!!!! Of the nominees, Down to Earth is such a better song than Jai-ho but overall, I think The Wrestler should have been nominated and also should have won

Let me know what you think about these songs!
