Did They Get it Right? – Best Original Song – Oscars 1987

DTGIR 1987

Once again, here is another great Oscar year for Original Songs from the 80’s.  I think 4 of the 5 songs are great and there are so many more that could have been added to the list.

AS a child of the 80’s I grew up on all these songs and love listening to them all over and over.

The ultimate winner is a superb song, so I can’t really complain too much here!

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

  • “Shakedown” – Beverly Hills Cop II • Music: Harold Faltermeyer and Keith Forsey • Lyrics: Harold Faltermeyer, Keith Forsey and Bob Seger

  • “Cry Freedom” – Cry Freedom • Music and Lyrics: George Fenton and Jonas Gwangwa

  • “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” – Mannequin • Music and Lyrics: Albert Hammond and Diane Warren

  • “Storybook Love” – The Princess Bride • Music and Lyrics: Willy DeVille

  • “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” – Dirty Dancing – Music: Franke Previte, John DeNicola and Donald Markowitz • Lyrics: Franke Previte

Song (s) that I think should have been included in the mix: (Not sure if all really are eligible according to Oscar standards…)

  • Secret of My Success – Night Ranger (Secret of My Success)

  • Who’s That Girl – Madonna (Who’s That Girl)

  • Babysitting Blues – Elisabeth Shue (Adventures in Babysitting)

  • She’s Like the Wind – Patrick Swayze (Dirty Dancing)

  • Hungry Eyes – Eric Carmen (Dirty Dancing)

  • The Living Daylights – A-HA (The Living Daylights)

  • We’ve Never Danced – Martha Davis (Made in Heaven)

  • The Price of Love – Roger Daltry (Secret of My Success)

My Rankings:

Songs

  • 5. – Cry Freedom
  • 4. – Shakedown
  • 3. – Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now
  • 2. – Storybook Love
  • 1. – I’ve Had the Time of my Life

Movies

  • 5. – Cry Freedom (Never Seen)
  • 4. – Mannequin
  • 3. – Dirty Dancing
  • 2. – Beverly Hills Cop
  • 1. – The Princess Bride

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Most definitely, despite the movie not being so spectacular, this song is superb!

Let me know what you think about these songs!

  1. I think I’d have to go for Cry Freedom here… but that’s because Nkosi Sikeli’ iAfrica is my country’s national anthem and I think it’s one of the most beautiful songs in the world.
