Airplane II: The Sequel (1982)

airplane II“Irony can be pretty ironic sometimes. “- Buck Murdoch

Number of Times Seen – at least 10 times (cable in the 80’s and 90’s, 14 Oct 2009 and 5 May 2016)

Brief Synopsis – In the sequel to the disaster spoof Airplane! (1980), former veteran Ted Striker must once again save a plane filled with passengers when the crew of their space shuttle loses its crew en route to the moon.

My Take on it – This is another favorite of mine from my youth and is almost as funny as the original.

The jokes and gags used here are really funny and once again, I couldn’t stop laughing all the way thru.

Not only do they manage to make fun of airplane disaster movies, but they add in lots of parodies of sci-fi films.

The fact that they were able to get William Shatner to spoof himself is classic and the returning cast helps with the continuity of the story.

It’s a bit of a shame that the team of ZAZ didn’t participate in this sequel because it would have probably been even better.

Bottom Line – Almost as funny as the original. Gags and jokes are once again hilarious and poignant. Great returning cast. Expertly spoofs airplane and sci-fi films. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The Zucker/Abrahams directing trio (Jerry Zucker, David Zucker and Jim Abrahams) claim (on the audio commentary on the DVD release of Airplane! (1980)) never to have seen this film. They initially agreed to a sequel and then balked at the idea at a later date. The movie went ahead without their permission and despite their protests – thus, they refused to watch a single frame of it upon its release – and still have not over 20 years later.  (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy

  2. Wow, that good huh? I might actually have to give it a look now. I too balked at the idea of sequelizing Airplane! because it’s one of my all-time favorites and you simply can’t duplicate its magic. But it sounds like you can come damn close. Nice one Rob.
