Airport ’77 (1977)

Airport 77 One Sheet ” Excuse me, I don’t mean to intrude, but could you move your ass, dear? ” – Karen Wallace

Number of Times Seen – at least 3 times (Cable in the 80’s, 5 Feb 2013 and 4 May 2016)

Brief Synopsis – A private plane filled with valuables is hijacked mid-air and crashes in the Ocean near the Bermuda TRiangle.  The crew and passengers must find a way to get out before

My Take on it – Once again, they made another film in teh series with the attempt to recapture the magic and uniqueness of the original film and failed to make anything better than average.

This movie actually feels like a very long drawn out TV episode with lots and lots of amazing cameos from well-known stars.

The story though isn’t as thrilling as one would expect.

Jack Lemmon, Jimmy Stewart, Lee Grant, Joseph Cotten, Olivia De Havilland, Darren McGavin, George Kennedy, Christopher Lee, Kathleen Quinlan, Gil Gerard and M. Emmet Walsh all do a great job, but once again, the storyline can’t help them achieve even more than they can with it.

I actually really enjoyed watching Jack Lemmon in this film because he plays against type as the action-type hero insteda of the down on his luck hero like usual.

All in all, this is an average disaster film that might have been more suited for a shorter version without it feeling so drawn out.

Bottom Line – Feels more like a drawn out TV episode with lots of excellent cameos than a thrilling disaster movie. Loved Lemmon in this because he usually doesn’t play an action-type hero like he does here. Great cast still doesn’t help elevate this above average.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – As was a practice at Universal Pictures for a brief period during the mid 1970s, a television version of the movie was made with lots more footage included. This was also done for Universal’s Earthquake (1974) and Two-Minute Warning (1976). (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
