Did They Get it Right? – Best Original Song – Oscars 1990

DTGIR 1990

This year has some pretty good songs, but only one great one and that is Blaze of Glory by Bon Jovi. The song won at the Golden Globes, but couldn’t prevail at the Oscars since they love Warren Beatty and Madonna

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

  • “Blaze of Glory” – Young Guns II • Music and Lyrics: Jon Bon Jovi

  • “I’m Checkin’ Out” – Postcards from the Edge • Music and Lyrics: Shel Silverstein

  • “Promise Me You’ll Remember” – The Godfather Part III • Music: Carmine Coppola • Lyrics: John Bettis

  • “Somewhere in My Memory” – Home Alone • Music: John Williams • Lyrics: Leslie Bricusse

  • Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)” – Dick Tracy – Music and Lyrics: Stephen Sondheim

Song (s) that I think should have been included in the mix: (Not sure if all really are eligible according to Oscar standards…)

  • Doubleback – ZZ Top (Back to the Future Part III)

  • Takin Care of Business – Bachman-Turner Overdrive (Taking Care of Business)

My Rankings:

Songs

  • 5. – Promise Me You’ll Remember
  • 4. – I’m Checkin Out
  • 3. – Sooner or Later
  • 2. – Somewhere in My Memory
  • 1. – Blaze of Glory

Movies

  • 5. – Postcards from the Edge
  • 4. – Dick Tracy
  • 3. – Young Guns
  • 2. – The Godfather Part III
  • 1. – Home Alone

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – No way! Blaze of Glory is a much better song and is also much more memorable than any of Madonna’s Dick Tracy songs

Let me know what you think about these songs!
