“I dont know of any other director out there that has such a love and passion for the game. He has every nuance, every lineup for 1961 branded in his brain and he become a resource in itself. he spent a lot of painstaking time getting this right.- Robert Colesbury
Number of Times Seen – 2 (Dec 2001 and 8 May 2016)
Brief Synopsis – The making of the movie depicting the friendship and rivalry between two baseball greats in 1961 as the challenged Babe Ruth’s long standing Single Season Home Run Record.
My Take on it – Certain movies have a aura about them that shows how much the director invested of himself in order to create an amazing and personal movie.
61* (2001) is a movie like that.
Every time that I’ve seen it, I’ve been amazed at the detail and love that seems to emanate from it mainly because of its director, Billy Crystal.
This film is a behind the scenes look at how the movie was made and planed out by Crystal and his team in order to give us the best possible experience of baseball in the summer of 1961.
This documentary makes it clear that Crystal was truly the best choice to direct because he himself is an expert on the subject of that Home Run Race that summer and also personally knew and was friends with Mickey Mantle. Both of these factors give him an edge over anyone else who would have tried to make this film.
We get so much information about how this film was made and came to be.
This film’s perspective also helps add many layers of understanding and meaning to the film itself and its relevance to the history and impact of baseball for fans from any generation.
The personal interviews with the cast, crew and real life counterparts of the characters from the movie adds so much to the overall relevance of 61* (2001) itself.
This is the perfect companion piece!
Bottom Line – Easy to see that 61*(2001) was made with so much love by the way it is expertly described in this film. Crystal was one of the best choices for Directing and the end results prove that for a fact. Great collections of behind the scenes information about 61* (2001) and this film adds another layer to the meaning and understanding of the film. Highly Recommended!
