Did They Get it Right? – Best Original Song – Oscars 1999

DTGIR 1999

This year had some great nominees for Best Original Song and it wasn’t easy ranking them because each is great in its own way.  Ultimately, I agree with the Academy and Globes final decision because it’s a moving song that worked very well and is also in a Disney animated movie.  When seeking other songs to include on this list, I came across some excellent ones that would also be worthy of being included with these 5.

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

  • “Save Me” – Magnolia • Music and Lyrics: Aimee Mann

  • “Music of My Heart” – Music of the Heart • Music and Lyrics: Diane Warren

  • “Blame Canada” – South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut • Music and Lyrics: Trey Parker and Marc Shaiman

  • “When She Loved Me” – Toy Story 2 • Music and Lyrics: Randy Newman

  • “You’ll Be in My Heart” – Tarzan– Music and Lyrics: Phil Collins

Song (s) that I think should have been included in the mix: (Not sure if all really are eligible according to Oscar standards…)

  • Beautiful Stranger – Madonna (Austin Powers: The Spy who Shagged Me)

  • How Can I Not Love You Joy Enriquez (Anna and the King)

  • Then You Look At Me – Celine Dion (Bicentennial Man)

  • The Great Beyond – R.E.M. (Man on the Moon)

  • When You Say Nothing At All – Ronan Keating – (Notting Hill)

  • In Our Lifetime – Texas (Notting Hill)

  • The World is Not Enough – Garbage (The World is Not Enough)

My Rankings:

  • 5. – Save Me
  • 4. – When She Loved Me
  • 3. – Blame Canada
  • 2. – Music of My Heart
  • 1. – You’ll Be In My Heart

  • 5. – South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut
  • 4. – Magnolia
  • 3. – Tarzan
  • 2. – Music of the Heart
  • 1. – Toy Story 2

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Yes. I think Phil Collin’s song is great despite this being a very competitive year featuring some great songs that were nominated, but if I had to choose from the whole list here, I’d say that When You Look at Me is the best overall.

Let me know what you think about these songs!

  1. My ranking:
    1. Yo’ll be in My Heart ( Phil Collins )
    2. In Our Lifetime ( Texas )
    3. When You Say Nothing At All ( Ronan Keating )

I couldn’t watch the video song by Joy Enriquez. It’s ironic because she’s a Filipino- American, like me.

Let me Know what you think!!
