Did They Get it Right? – Best Original Song – Oscars 1991

DTGIR 1991

This year is yet another great year for Original Songs. The fact that Disney got 3 of the 5 nominees says a lot about the way they were able to dominate this category in the 90’s.

I’m a big Bryan Adams fan, so it was nice to see him on the list and his song happens to be excellent, but it still isn’t better than the eventual winner.

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

  • “Be Our Guest” – Beauty and the Beast • Music: Alan Menken • Lyrics: Howard Ashman (posthumous nomination)

  • “Belle” – Beauty and the Beast • Music: Alan Menken • Lyrics: Howard Ashman (posthumous nomination)

  • “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You” – Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves • Music: Michael Kamen • Lyrics: Bryan Adams and Robert John Lange

  • “When You’re Alone” – Hook • Music: John Williams • Lyrics: Leslie Bricusse

  • Beauty and the Beast” – Beauty and the Beast – Music: Alan Menken • Lyrics: Howard Ashman

Song (s) that I think should have been included in the mix: (Not sure if all really are eligible according to Oscar standards…)

  • Tears in Heaven – Eric Clapton (Rush)

  • Dreams to Dreams – (An American Tail: Feivel Goes West)

  • The Show Goes On – Bruce Hornsby (Backdraft)

  • Set Me in Motion – Bruce Hornsby (Backdraft)

My Rankings:

Songs

  • 5. – When You’re Alone
  • 4. – Belle
  • 3. – Be Our Guest
  • 2. – Everything I Do, I Do For You
  • 1. – Beauty and the Beast

Movies

  • 3. – Hook
  • 2. – Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
  • 1. – Beauty and the Beast

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Most Definitely! I love the title song from B&TB and it’s such an emotional song that is much more memorable than the other 4 nominees.

Let me know what you think about these songs!
