Did They Get it Right? – Best Original Song – Oscars 1980

DTGIR 1980

This is obviously a year where I didn’t watch the songs live at the Oscars (I was 6), but there are some great songs nominated and there are also some great ones that missed out on the nominations that year.

I agree with the winner though because it really is a great and worthy song!

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

  • “People Alone” – The Competition • Music: Lalo Schifrin • Lyrics: Will Jennings

  • “Out Here on My Own” – Fame • Music: Michael Gore • Lyrics: Lesley Gore

  • “On the Road Again” – Honeysuckle Rose • Music and Lyrics: Willie Nelson

  • “9 to 5” – 9 to 5 • Music and Lyrics: Dolly Parton

  • “Fame” – Fame – Music: Michael Gore • Lyrics: Dean Pitchford

Song (s) that I think should have been included in the mix: (Not sure if all really are eligible according to Oscar standards…)

  • Love on the Rocks (The Jazz Singer)

  • Call Me – Blondie (American Gigolo)

  • Midnight Madness -Donna Fein (Midnight Madness)

  • I’m Alright -Kenny Loggins (Caddyshack)

  • Anyway You Want It – Journey (Caddyshack)

  • I Sing the Body Electric – Cast (Fame)

My Rankings:

  • 5. – People Alone
  • 4. – On the Road Again
  • 3. – Out Here on My Own
  • 2. – 9 to 5
  • 1. – Fame

  • 4. – The Competition
  • 3. – Honeysuckle Rose
  • 2. – 9 to 5
  • 1. – Fame

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? – Fame is an excellent song and definitely deserves its win this year.

Let me know what you think about these songs!

  1. LOVE Blondie! That was a great entry Rob, I’ve heard ‘Call Me’ in a few films and it’s so effective, especially that drum at the beginning, really kicks it off nicely 🙂

As far as the real Oscar songs go, my votes goes to Dolly Parton for 9 to 5. Anyone who’s EVER worked 9-5 will nod at those lyrics, it’s a great song! Not a huge fan of the Fame song anyway.
