Did They Get it Right? – Best Original Song – Oscars 1995

DTGIR 1995

This is another great year for Movie Original Songs and the nominees this year are all very good. AS usual for this decade, Disney was able to create an amazing song for another of their animated films and once again dominated most of the awards ceremonies with their theme song for Pocahontas.  AS much as I love it tho, there are some even better songs in my list of additions below!

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

  • “Dead Man Walkin'” – Dead Man Walking • Music and Lyrics: Bruce Springsteen

  • “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?” – Don Juan DeMarco • Music and Lyrics: Michael Kamen, Bryan Adams, and Robert John Lange

  • “Moonlight” – Sabrina • Music: John Williams • Lyrics: Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman

  • “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” – Toy Story • Music and lyrics: Randy Newman

  • “Colors of the Wind” – Pocahontas – Music: Alan Menken • Lyrics: Stephen Schwartz

Song (s) that I think should have been included in the mix: (Not sure if all really are eligible according to Oscar standards…)

  • Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me – U2 (Batman Forever)

  • Cole’s Song – Julian Lennon (Mr. Holland’s Opus)

  • Visions of a Sunset – Shawn Stockman (Mr. Holland’s Opus)

  • Kiss From A Rose – Seal (Batman Forever)

  • GoldenEye – Tina Turner (GoldenEye)

My Rankings:

Songs

  • 5. – Moonlight
  • 4. – Dead Man Walking
  • 3. – You’ve Got A Friend in Me
  • 2. – Have You Ever Really Loved a Women?
  • 1. – Colors in the Wind

Movies

  • 5. – Don Juan DeMarco
  • 4. – Sabrina
  • 3. – Dead Man Walking
  • 2. – Pocahontas
  • 1. – Toy Story

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? -Most definitely, Colors of the Wind is a superb Disney Original Song that is much better than the competition here despite them all being very good.  If my choices would have been nominated tho, I’d have gone with either Cole’s Song or Visions of Sunset.

Let me know what you think about these songs!
