This is the seventh of 12 films that I was “forced” to watch by my fellow bloggers who participated in my Blogiversary Contest last month. This movie was chosen by Marta. Tnx for the suggestion. Let’s see what I thought of it….
–
“Beating crime used to be our mandate, now all that matters is the crime rate.” – Det. Lau Ching Hei
Number of Times Seen – 1 (17 May 2016)
Brief Synopsis – A private detective who quit the police following his girlfriend’s death and who’s life has spiraled downward ever since, takes on the case of the murder of a friend’s father to find out what really happened.
My Take on it – Everyone who knows me, knows that I am not a fan of non-English language films because I always feel something missing when I can’t understand what is being said all the time.
That being said, when Marta suggested I watch this film, I had decided that I would watch whatever movie is “forced” on me because that was the original deal.
With no simple way out, I chose to just watch this and get it over with.
I absolutely loved the premise here and the story works extremely well… up until they reveal the mystery waaay too early on which takes away a lot of the suspense and mystery of it all.
They leave nice clues to the mystery along teh way and when it was over, I was pleased with the way they threw down the breadcrumbs.
Unfortunately, this could have been an even better film had they kept us in suspense for even longer.
I truly hope that the upcoming US remake of this film learns from this when planning out the storyline.
Yes, the subtitles threw me off a bit as expected, but in the end I’m quite glad I saw this because it is a very enjoyable thriller.
Bottom Line – Excellent premise that let’s us in on the secret too early which takes away so much of the suspense and mystery. Liked the clues left for us along the way. Could have been so much better and I hope that the upcoming US remake corrects those errors in the storyline. The subtitles threw me off a bit (as usual), but still quite and enjoyable thriller. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The film was nominated for seven awards in the 26th Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Art Direction, Best Costume and Make-Up Design, and Best Original Film Score. However, it only won one award for Best Cinematography. (From Wikipedia)
Rating – Globe Worthy

I may have to check this out because I love Hong Kong genre films but I HATE when mysteries get all their good twists out of the way too quickly.
