The Gathering Storm (2002)

gathering storm“Nazism is more than just a political movement. It’s a cult… a religion based on the idea of racial purity. Mankind, the Nazis believe is divided between…the man-gods and the subhumans… aliens who will be used as beasts of burden… or merely disposed of.  Those with pure Aryan blood are the man-gods. The beasts are the Jews.” – Ralph Wigram

Number of Times Seen – 1 (25 May 2016)

Brief Synopsis – An in-depth look at the life of Winston Churchill during the troubling days before the outbreak of WWII.

My Take on it – Growing up in the states, most of my History lessons in school focused on the American side of things and we only got a glossy look at foreign politics and events.

Watching this film gave me such a clear picture of how Hitler’s rise to power was perceived by the British Parliament who debated many issues back and forth during the years prior to the outbreak of war; some aware of what was to come, but other choosing to ignore it.

Albert Finney is truly amazing as Winston Churchill and he deservingly won Best Actor Awards at the Emmy’s and Globes that year for this role.

The film also won Best TV Movie at both of those shows and only upon watching this did I realized how much I had missed by not seeing this in the 14 years since it came out.

The supporting cast is superb; Linus Roach, Jim Broadbent, Vanessa Redgrave, Hugh Bonneville, Lena Headey, Derek Jacobi, Tom Wilkinson and Tom Hiddleston are all great here and give the film a broader feeling of grandeur due to their excellent performances.

This film reminds me how lacking my knowledge of British history truly is and I need to find ways to broaden my knowledge of the main events that helped mold the world that we all now live in.

Bottom Line – Excellent story that tells us so much about the inner workings of the British Parliament during the days leading up to the outbreak of WWII.  Finney is amazing as Churchill and this film truly deserved it’s Globe and Emmy wins. Amazing supporting cast gives this film much grandeur. Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Won both Best TV Movie and Best TV Movie Actor (Albert Finney) at both the Emmy’s and The Golden Globes (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy

  1. Holy crap. That cast is amazing, I have to see this for that reason alone. A second good reason would be that I also have only a general picture of the situation pre-WWII. And utterly no knowledge of the British perspective. Thanks for putting this one on my radar Rob
