Number of Times Seen – 2 (cable in the 80’s and 29 May 2016)
Brief Synopsis – An aspiring businessman takes a job as a bartender in order to get thru college and learns about a whole new lifestyle.
My Take on it – I saw this movie back hen it was on cable in the 80’s and the only thing I remembered from this film was that Tom Cruise and Elisabeth Shue starred in it and it was the film that made the song Kokomo famous.
Now I know why.
This movie was really bad.
The whole plot is a silly Hollywood cookie cutter scenario that wastes the talents of Elisabeth “The babysitter” Shue and Tom Cruise.
The problem here with the plot is that nothing really interesting happens and we don’t care enough about any of the characters to give a hot what will happen to them.
There are a few cool bottle flipping scenes that are nice to watch once every 30 years or so. (I’m sure there are more interesting bottle flips on YouTube if someone really wants to see professionals do it)
Besides that, the music is fun to listen to, especially the song Kokomo that helped bring the Beach Boys back into the fold for a bit after a bit of a hiatus.
For those living under a rock and have never heard the song, here’s a clip
Bottom Line – This is a pretty silly film that is a waste of talent like Shue and even Cruise. The story seems to try and fit a cookie cutter Hollywood romance but fails miserably in keeping things fresh and interesting. Has sone great music and a few cool bottle flipping scenes but otherwise a complete dud.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Actress Gina Gershon stated in a podcast Interview that during their bed scene, Tom Cruise, knew she was extremely ticklish, and tickled her so hard, they both fell off the bed. It was in fact this take that production used for the movie. (From IMDB)
Rating – Razzie Worthy
