G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (1983)

gi joe“[after seeing Duke’s vision of the Cobra Fortress] It looks like the Hotel Dracula! ” – Clutch

Number of Times Seen – Between 3-5 times (TV in the 80’s and 1 Jun 2016)

Brief Synopsis – After COBRA steals a top secret government satellite, the Joes must find the rare elements for the M.A.S.S. device that will allow them to stop COBRA from taking control of the world.

My Take on it – As a kid, I loved everything dealing with the military and G.I. Joe was very high on that list. I collected the action figures, the comics and watched the cartoon as often as I could.

This mini-series was what started it all on TV back in 1983 and I remembered watching and loving this whenever it would be on.

The problem with the show is that unlike Disney and Pixar movies, this was created solely for the entertainment of kids and it’s hard to still love it as an adult.

The fact that elite soldiers on both sides can never hit anyone else is obviously absurd; the fact that every aircraft that gets shot down still gives the pilot enough time to bail out successfully with a parachute and of course the fact that each Joe has a “uniquely strange” specialty, but they all can fly planes or do any other needed activity (scuba diving, flying with a jet pack, etc.) also seems a bit strange.

Watching this was quite nostalgic for me but at the same time, I was once again reminded that perspectives change when one gets older and the fact that I can enjoy this film, but still not be as excited now as I was over 30 years ago, it disappointing but understandable.

The one thing I truly love here is the theme song.  Here’s the intro song and an Acapella version of it that I found.

Bottom Line – Loved this show as a kid, but it remains entertaining solely for kids because of the various silly plot elements of the show in general and this miniseries in particular.  Was very nostalgic watching it because it reminded me of my youth and my love for this show and all things military.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Most of the vehicles from both G.I. Joe and COBRA were based on actual military vehicles. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
