Royalty on Film Blogathon – The Three Musketeers (1993)

Brief Synopsis – A young hotshot swordsman teams up with three renegade Musketeers in an attempt to stop the evil Cardinal Richelieu from assassinating the King and taking over the crown of France.

My Take on it – Ever since I saw this film in the theater back in 1993, I have been enamored by the way this story is told.

For me, it is the best of Dumas’ adaptations for the screen because it works so well on so many levels.

The cast is superbly 90’s and most of them are still hot commodities twenty plus years later. Chris O’Donnell, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, Rebecca De Mornay, Oliver Platt, Julie Delpy, Hugh O’Conor, Gabrielle Anwar, Tim Curry and Michael Wincott are all excellent here.

This movie is a mix of action, drama, adventure and romance so that there is something for everyone.

I loved how they were able to show what people are willing to do for love of each other, for love of their country and for love of a beloved monarch.

There are two very emotional scenes in this film that always make me tear up and both have to do with budding love.

When Constance helps D’Artagnan and gives him his sword, the look on her face always gets me and the way that the young king and queen finally prove their love for one another.

It was great showing the inexperienced monarchs slowly understanding their surroundings both politically and socially as they embark on a new future together.

The music by Michael Kamen is beautiful and is capped by the amazing theme song sung by a trio of 90’s Musketeers; Sting, Bryan Adams and Rod Stewart.

Im still in shock that their song didn’t even get an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song that year.

I wonder if it wasn’t eligible for some reason.

Bottom Line – For me this is such a powerful movie on so many different levels. Its funny, romantic, action and adventure packed and shows what people are willing to do or are capable of doing for the love of a woman or of a country or of a just monarch. Excellent cast works so well here. The budding love between the young king and queen is played out so perfectly as they embark on a joint future together. Amazing music by Michael Kamen that is capped by the theme song sung by Sting, Bryan Adams and Rod Stewart. Highly recommended!
