“You can never escape me. Nothing harms me. But I know pain. I know pain. Sometimes I share it with someone like you. ” – Batman
Number of Times Seen – 1 (9 Jun 2016)
Brief Synopsis – A retelling of the Batman origin while at the same time telling the story of James Gordon.
My Take on it –This was a movie that was recommended to me by Prime Six about six weeks ago and it actually sparked my interest in watching all of the DC/WB animated movies.
I wanna thank him for recommending this movie to me and for giving me the idea to start watching the films in this series.
It took me a while to get here because I tried to watch them all in chronological order.
I have been a fan of Batman for as long as I can remember and one of the main things I like about the stories is the fact that they are quite dark and gritty both in characters and the way the city of Gotham is portrayed.
I was a bit concerned that DC/WB would slightly dampen the grittiness of this because it’s an animated movie.
Thankfully, they didn’t.
They got the dark tone completely right and keep it on the right level the entire time.
I loved how they were able to give us both the perspective of Jim Gordon and of Brice Wayne/Batman.
Revamping the origin stories of those two pivotal characters worked quite well here and I liked the way they did it.
As with most of the DC/WB animated movies, they have an amazing voice cast led by Bryan Cranston and Ben McKenzie.
Bottom Line – Loved the way they did this movie. For an animated movie, they were able to get the grittiness of the character and city perfectly. Loved how they gave us perspectives from both Wayne and Gordon and how we got to see their reinvigorated origin stories along the way. Great cast of voice actors. Highly Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Bryan Cranston originally turned down the part of Jim Gordon because he thought this project was based on Batman (1966). He accepted after he read the script. (From IMDB)
Rating – Oscar Worthy

I wholeheartedly agree! No story was sacrificed for the sake of it being animated, a crime drama more so than a comic book film.

Great movie. As close to the original source material as any comic can get. The Dark Knight Returns movies are also worth a look too.

Oh good, I was avoiding this one because I had read Frank Miller’s comic and was worried that it wouldn’t hold up. I shouldn’t be surprised given the voice talent. It’s on Netflix so I’ll check it out.
