Dogma (1999)

dogma[after throwing Bartleby and Loki off a train; a la Indiana Jones] “No ticket.” – Silent Bob

Number of Times Seen – at least 3 times (7 Aug 2000, DVD and 19 Jun 2016)

Brief Synopsis – Jay and Silent Bob get recruited to help a woman who is charged with stopping two bad angels from re-entering Heaven.

My Take on it – Only someone like Kevin Smith could really pull off something like this.

He makes a very controversial film that at the same time both skewers and lauds many known religions.

He is amazing at writing fun stories with intelligent and engaging dialogue and this movie follows suit the entire way through to help make this more fun to watch.

The cast is amazing. Besides Smith and his acting partner Jason Mewes (playing Jay and Silent Bob), this movie has roles for Linda Fiorentina, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, George Carlin, Chris Rock, Jason Lee, Alan Rickman and Salma Hayek and they all are here to help make this film even more fun.

Drags a bit in the middle, but overall it’s a lot of fun.

Jay and Silent Bob have a more extended appearance here and despite them being quite funny, it’s too much for them; they are great supporting characters, but aren’t the best as leading ones.

Bottom Line – Fun and very controversial movie that takes organized religion for a spin.  Only someone as intelligent as Smith could pull this off by both insulting and lauding every known religion at the same time.  Amazing cast helps make this even more fun.  Excellent script and dialogue by Smith raises the level of enjoyment even higher. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When they heard Alan Rickman was a Chasing Amy (1997) fan, Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier felt confident enough to ask him to play Metatron. He read the script and came back with only two questions: 1) would we stay faithful to the script, and 2) are the wings real or CGI? (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
