Mallrats (1995)

mallrats “Adventure, excitement… a Jedi craves not these things. ” – Silent Bob

Number of Times Seen – at least 3 times (10 Jun 2000, DVD and 19 Jun 2016)

Brief Synopsis – After two best friends both get dumped, the decide to go to the mall to hang out.

My Take on it – This was Kevin Smith’s first real foray into the world of studio films.

It doesn’t look as amateurish as Clerks (1994), but it still feels as if the script was watered down a bit by studio execs and instead of getting a real Kevin Smith film, it seems like a John Hughes wanna-be movie.

That’s the main reason why this is my least favorite of the seven View skew films.  (By looking at my rating below, even the “worst” film still deserves a Globe Worthy from me (7 or an 8 out of 10), which shows my love for Smith’s filmmaking and writing ability.)

The hi-jinx here seems a bit far-fetched, but still makes things fun to watch.

The best part of this movie though is the many different Wile E. Coyote scenarios that Jay and Silent Bob attempt when trying to sabotage the game show event at the mall.

As a die hard Star Wars fan, I loved the many references t the trilogy in this movie especially the Jedi Mind Trick ones that seem so perfect within the scheme of things.

Bottom Line – My least favorite of the movies in the View Askew universe. Some nice hi-jinx but I think the main reason it doesn’t work as well is because the characters feel like they should be in a John Hughes type film instead of a Kevin Smith one. Love Jay and Silent Bob’s Wile E. Coyote attempts at sabotage. Amazing Star Wars references all around! Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When Renee (Shannen Doherty) runs to tell Jay and Silent Bob that Brodie and T.S. are being arrested, Ethan Suplee (Willam) says, “Brenda?” – a joke reference to Doherty’s character on Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990). The exchange wasn’t in the script, but rather, Suplee was told to say this by Smith before the scene was shot, and so was Doherty. However, Suplee wasn’t told that she would respond, so his reaction is genuine.(From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
