A Bigger Splash (2015)

Number of Times Seen – 1 (22 Jun 2016)

Brief Synopsis – A couple on vacation on a remote island are interrupted when a longtime friend and his teenage daughter join them unexpectedly causing events of the past to resurface.

My Take on it – This is a movie that I was quite interested to see since I had heard form multiple sources how great a film it was.

In some ways the pacing and characters reminded me in numerous ways of Youth (2015) (which I also wasn’t much of a fan of).

This story pretty much bored me almost the whole way through and things only started to get interesting about 3/4 of the way and that part slightly elevated my opinion of this film.

It’s hard to complain about the cast here because they really are good.  Ralph Fiennes plays a character which is a total 180 degree turn from what he has played in the past and does a wonderful job here.

I really wished that this film would have spoken to me more than it did because I still wonder what others were able to glean from it that I was unable to see.

Bottom Line – Expected this to be much better than it was. Was bored throughout mist of the film until the last half hour made things much more interesting. Great cast helps a bit and I found Fiennes’ character to really be the polar opposite of what he usually plays which was a bit refreshing to see.  Unfortunately, this film didn’t really speak to me.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Initially, Tilda Swinton didn’t want to do this movie. Not this one nor others, due to the recent death of her mother, she ended up changing her mind and proposed the idea of this woman unable to speak into the established story of ancient histories and new lives thrown into relief by one another. Not only as a twist to ramp up the tensions between the characters, but also as a way of exploring the possibilities of silence in a portrait of a character surrounded by the noise of others and the legacy of the noise she had herself made in the past. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
