Number of Times Seen – at least three times (Cable in the 80’s/90’s and 3 Jul 2016)
Brief Synopsis – A rookie police officer on her first day on the job stops a holdup in a convenience store and then mysteriously starts being stalked by a psychopath
My Take on it – I recall seeing this film a few times on cable 25 years ago and enjoying it, but upon rewatching it, I realize that the premise works well, but the way it is played out just doesn’t work like it should.
I found myself too often yelling at the characters on the screen to stop doing silly things, but just like in a bad horror film, the screaming that you audience member aim at the screen can’t change the mediocre script.
The cast is quite good, but unfortunately none of them can overcome the poor script.
I have always enjoyed the work of Jamie Lee Curtis, Clancy Brown and especially the over the top Ron Silver and they all do well within the confines of their characters who all could afford to be a bit smarter in their actions throughout the film.
In the end, this is a typical 80’s thriller that seems to work within the context of the script, but when looking back, it’s easy to see that it just doesn’t age as well as it probably could have had they brushed up some of the script along the way.
It’s easy to see the future potential of Director Katheryn Bigelow with this film, but she still wasn’t there yet no matter how hard she tried.
Bottom Line -Mediocre cat and mouse thriller that makes you want to constantly scream at the people on the screen for doing silly things. Curtis, Silver and Brown are all good here and would be even better if their characters were a bit smarter. Typical 80’s fare that works within its own context, but doesn’t age as well as it probably could have. Bigelow is good as director, but it’s easy to see that she still has a way to go to reach her potential.
