Number of Times Seen – 1 (4 Jul 2016)
Brief Synopsis – A Southern single woman having difficulties in life tries to find a way to get on the right path and seek real love.
My Take on it – I have always liked Joey Lauren Adams and was quite excited when I heard that she wrote and directed a film.
It wasn’t easy finding a copy, but I’m glad I eventually did.
The script does an excellent job showing us the dichotomous life that the main character leads; she is destructive in relationships with just about everyone she knows but is excellent at her job and loves it.
Adams wrote the main character to be played by herself but since she was too busy directing, she chose Ashley Judd to take the role instead.
Judd is very good here, but I’m slightly disappointed that Adams couldn’t take the job because I think she would have given us an even better performance than Judd.
The main character is so easy to like and want to root for in spite of her own flaws.
The supporting cast is quite impressive despite the low budget with Jeffrey Donovan, Laura Prepon, Tim Blake Nelson, Scott Wilson, Diane Ladd, Ray McKinnon and Stacy Keach all taking part.
I really hope that Adams has more ideas like this up her sleeve and is able to treat us to more wonderful films like this one.
Bottom Line – Judd is great here but I’m a bit disappointed that Adams wasn’t able to take on the role because she would have been even better IMHO. The script works very well to present to us the troubling and motivating aspects of her life. Despite her character flaws, it’s easy to like the main character and even easier to want to see her succeed in life. Impressive supporting cast for such a low budget film. Hope Adams has more gems like this up her sleeve. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Joey Lauren Adams wrote the part of Lucy for herself, but gave the part to Ashley Judd when she decided she would be unable to direct the film and star in it. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
