The Eagle Has Landed (1976)

The Eagle Has Landed - Original UK Quad - Linen backed (1977)“I have no intention of dying now. But if I’m going to, allow me to choose where and how. ” – Steiner

Number of Times Seen – 2 (9 Feb 2000 and 6 Jul 2016)

Brief Synopsis – In the final days of World War II, an elite German commando squad is send on a daring mission to kidnap Winston Churchill.

My Take on it – After the success of movies like The Dirty Dozen (1967), many copycat movies with similar themes were churned out by the studios about a team of men on a secret mission during World War II.

This is one of those kind of movies but the twist here us that it is all about a German mission to end the war by kidnapping Winston Churchill.

The story works well and is quite fun to watch since it fills the German ranks with famous British and American actors.

Michael Caine, Robert Duvall, Donald Pleasance, Donald Sutherland, Treat Williams and Larry Hagman are all great to watch here.

Due to the fact that this is about a German mission, they try pretty hard to convince us of the honor of the soldiers and the fact that they are loyal to their homeland and not the butchers of innocents usually depicted

The fact that the cast is so familiar to the audience helps make the story feel even more real or plausible.

This was famed director John Sturges’ final film.

Bottom Line – Fun film filled with lots of action, but because it tries too hard to give us the view of the “other” side of the war while still trying to show the soldiers as moralists and loyal to their country, some of the seriousness of the film is lost. Excellent cast of actors help make this feel even more real. Not perfect but still done well. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – A funny thing about having a small stunt team: One of the German soldiers shoots & kill the driver of an American jeep, so it crashes into the pond. Both the German AND the driver of the jeep is played by the same stuntman Jim Dowdall. He kills himself, so to speak…  (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
