K-19: The Widowmaker (2002)

k19 “It’s never difficult to do one’s duty, Captain.” – Capt. Mikhail Polenin

Number of Times Seen – 2 (15 Oct 2005 and 6 Jul 2016)

Brief Synopsis – The captain and executive officer on a Russian submarine clash over what needs to be done when there is a nuclear reactor leak onboard their ship.

My Take on it – I saw this movie years ago and despite being a fan of both Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson, it never really left much of an impression on me.

Upon rewatching it, I must say that they chose a great title for the movie because it is soooo boring that I could understand if someone chose to take the title to heart and end it all right then and there.

The story has so little to offer and neither of the stars were able to somehow change that. As great as they both are, this is far from either of their best work.

I think Ford himself probably agrees with my sentiment (read the trivia section below)

The one good thing about this film is Kathryn Bigelow’s direction in such close quarters, we really feel as if we are traveling on the submarine with the cast.

Besides that, there isn’t much here IMHO which is unfortunate since Ford, Neeson and Bigelow are so talented. 😦

Bottom Line -The title of this film is very fitting because this movie is extremely boring to watch and I’m sure it’s more than possible that someone who had enough of life, watched this and decided to end it all. Didn’t feel that there was much to garner from a film like this. Ford and Neeson are both ok here, but neither gave their best performance here. Bigelow does a great job of filming things in a claustrophobic way that makes the viewer feel like they are on the sub with them.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – According to Jacob Pitts during one scene the director of photography was having trouble getting Harrison Ford’s eye line. When he asked Ford where he was looking Ford replied that he was looking into his soul. When the DP asked him where his soul was he replied “Under a pile of money.” (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy
