This post is another entry by me in this month’s A Timely Blogathon being run by Anna of Film Grimoire and myself.
Number of Times Seen – 1 (4 Jul 2016)
Brief Synopsis – After their homeland is destroyed, the refuges of Earth seeks a new home and begin a war with a peaceful planet called Terra where the inhabitants must fend them off.
My Take on it – When I saw the premise for this, I was slightly intrigued because it sounded quite interesting and innovative.
Unfortunately, once I started to watch it, I very quickly realized that it fit all too well the formulaic story line that has been used and over-used so man times in Hollywood.
This film reminded me too much of movies like Dances With Wolves (1990), Pocahontas (1995) or even Avatar (2009) (even though it still would only come out two years after this film) and a mediocre attempt at the known story line.
It’s quite interesting and baffling how they don’t make enough of an attempt to create new ideas for films like this instead of trying to find a way to recycle old ones that have been used so much in the past.
The main thing this movie has going for it is the animation which looks quite good and they found a nice way to present the special effects needed to make this look good visually.
The voice casting is also done quite well with Evan Rachel Wood, Justin Long, Luke Wilson, Chris Evans, Mark Hamill, James Garner, Rosanna Arquette and Amanda Peet all lending their voices for this.
The story unfortunately isn’t very memorable and instead of trying to create something new and innovative, they chose to go with tried and true average.
Bottom Line – In the end, it feels too much like a typical Hollywood standard and seems like another mediocre version of Dances With Wolves (1990), Pocahontas (1995) or even Avatar (2009), (which still hadn’t come out yet when this was made). The animation works well and I liked the way the special effects were presented. Nice voice casting. Unfortunately, the movie isn’t as memorable as it could have been and in the end just feels pretty average.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Originally conceived as a film with live actors playing the human characters. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
