Brief Synopsis – A small town slowly gets shook up after a gang of bikers show up on their way to the races in Daytona.
My Take on it – While trying to check out all of Kathryn Bigelow’s films I came across thus one which was actually the very first film she ever directed.
The style and feel of the film really doesn’t mesh well enough with the kind of films I usually enjoy.
I quickly found myself wishing that the movie would end sooner because it was basically a really long buildup to a big finale that doesn’t feel justified by the setup.
The one thing I did like about the film was the way that the atmosphere really set the tone for the time and place. The costumes and sets really helped transport us back to that time and place nestled somewhere between the 50’s and 60’s.
I’ve read that this film has a big cult following and I can really understand why despite it not really being my cup of tea.
This movie was also Willem Dafoe’s screen debut and his character does a good enough job leading the story in the direction it was meant to go.
Bottom Line – I can see how this kind of film can get a cult following but it just wasn’t my style at all. The plot moved along way too slowly and the long buildup for the finale just isn’t worthwhile enough. The best thing about the movie is the detailed clothes and sets that truly take us back to the late 50’s early 60’s in a nice pleasant way.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The film was originally called “Breakdown” but director Bigelow didn’t like the title, feeling it was too generic. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
