Number of Times Seen – 2 (30 Dec 2012 and 17 Jul 2016)
Brief Synopsis – As a couple turns 40, they see their lives falling apart much faster than they ever dreamed.
My Take on it – Judd Apatow decided to make a film that feels so personal making it even more fun and interesting to watch.
He basically made this film about how he himself felt turning the bug 4-0 and chose (wisely) to cast his wife and two young daughters as three of the main characters. He also wisely chose Paul Rudd as his alter-ego, but he is supposedly playing Apatow.
The rest of the cast is also superb with John Lithgow, Robert Smigel, Jason Segel, Megan Fox, Albert Brooks, and Melissa McCarthy.
The script works most of the time and it’s easy to see how much really can happen in life because they show the ups and the downs to numerous kinds of situations that can easily happen to us all.
Some of the scenes are both humorous and poignant at the same time because they are so relateable to people who find themselves in similar situations to the characters.
BTW, I find it quite funny that this film coincidentally turns out to be my 40th review this month 🙂
Bottom Line – Another very fun Apatow movie that works mostly because it seems that it is quite personal for him. His wife and daughters play major roles and he allows Paul Rudd to basically be him. Superb cast as always with Apatow’s films. The script mostly works despite a few minor drawbacks. Has some really poignant and hilarious lines that describe life’s up and downs so well. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Pete (Paul Rudd) makes a joke comparing his sexual prowess to that of David Schwimmer (and Ross, Schwimmer’s character from “Friends”) in a way that makes it clear that he thinks that neither Pete nor Schwimmer are very good in bed. A spokeswoman for Schwimmer told the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper that Schwimmer was not asked beforehand if he would be okay with being the butt of that joke, but Judd Apatow clarified that he didn’t mean anything insulting by it; just that Schwimmer is an example of a famous person who is more like Apatow. Paul Rudd was a regular guest star on “Friends” during the show’s last two seasons. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
