Number of Times Seen – at least twice (cable in the 90’s and 18 Jul 2016)
Brief Synopsis – Two young boys run away from home and travel across the country in order to join a videogame contest.
My Take on it – This was a movie that OI recalled seeing as a kid, but didn’t remember it much at all.
I must say tho, that this rewatch was pretty disappointing because as much as this film seemed to be state of the art gaming in 1989, it seems somewhat archaic looking at it in 2016.
It was nice to see some familiar faces in it tho, especially Fred Savage, Cristian Slater and Beau Bridges.
Unfortunately, the script itself seems too simplistic and in some instances downright silly and a lot of work would need to be done in order to make it a much more enjoyable watch.
The video game mock up look so funny because of the amazing advancements in the field over the last 25+ years.
I’m not an advocate of remakes, but this movie actually demands a remake because in today’s world where Gaming is so popular, they could probably do wonders with the premise shown to us here.
They make remakes of so many unworthy films, it really would be interesting to see a version of this one in 2017 or 2018, so potential writers out there, get crackin on it!
Bottom Line – Somewhat disappointing rewatch because it doesn’t age well at all. Nice to see Savage, Bridges and Slater here but the plot and script really needs a lot of tweaking in order to make this so much better. Actually a movie that deserves a remake now that gaming has become so much more popular.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – During the scene of the finals of Video Armageddon, the last game used for the final, Super Mario Bros. 3 (1988) was actually meant to be revealed in the film before the NES game was released. People were treated to see this particular NES game for the first time when the film was first released into theaters, and it is said by some gamers to help with the game’s success in the United States. Rating – BAFTA Worthy
