A TImely Blogathon – 14 Going on 30 (1988)

This post is my 6th entry in this month’s A Timely Blogathon being run by Anna of Film Grimoire and myself.

a timely blogathon 1Stick around to see (at least) one new entry a day from many of the talented writers who have joined us in watching and reviewing films under 90 minutes long.

14 GOING ON 30“Love can wait Danny, I am on the verge of a major scientific breakthrough that can change the world as we know it.” – Lloyd

Number of Times Seen – Twice (On TV in the 80’s and 13 Jul 2016)

Brief Synopsis – A young boy madly in love with his teacher finds a way to grow up quickly in order to try and stop her from getting married.

My Take on it – This is a film that I recall seeing when it was on The Wonderful World of Disney TV show back in 1988 and slowly forgot about over the years.

A few month back, I recalled the final scene of this movie (don’t worry, no spoiler) but couldn’t for the life of me recall the name of the film; all I recalled was the final scene and that it had a similar storyline to Big (1988).

I once again forgot about it and then a few weeks ago, I somehow recalled the premise once again and decided to do a search based on keywords instead of a title in order to try and discover what movie this was.

A simple google search gave me my answer and also revealed to me that the film was less than 90 minutes, so I immediately tracked it down (via YouTube nonetheless) and watched it.

My memory of the film favors it much more than I did now, but still got a few chuckles out of the whole thing.

It was nice to see TV dads Dick Van Patten and Alan Thicke in principle roles as none other than… Principals.

Most of the jokes feel too campy to laugh at and despite an interesting premise it doesn’t work as well as it probably could have.

I was surprised at the similarities to Big (1988) despite them both coming out so close to one another.

Bottom Line – Remember this one fondly from when it originated on TV back in ’88. Feels very campy now and despite an interesting premise, doesn’t work as well as it might have.  Very surprised at how similar a theme this has to Big (1988) which came out in theaters in the same year that this was made by Disney for TV.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The ending to this movie has often been mistaken for a lost alternate ending to Big, which was released the same year.(From Wikipedia)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
