Number of Times Seen – at least 2 (cable in the 90’s and 19 Jul 2016)
Brief Synopsis – A big screen adaptation of the musical about the life and rise to power of Argentina’s most famous first lady, Eva Peron.
My Take on it – It’s actually interesting that I’ve only seen this film twice despite knowing most of the songs on the soundtrack by heart.
Part of that probably has to do with the fact that this is one of the best musicals with virtually no dialogue… everything that is said is sung by the characters.
The advantage of this kind of musical as a film instead of on stage is that we are given even mire visual cues as to what is happening around the characters.
Madonna is great here as the lead and it’s no wonder that she was nominated for and won numerous awards for this role.
The songs themselves are amazing and they help to capture the atmosphere of everything happening while also giving us a description of it all at the same time.
Ive never been the biggest fan of Antonio Banderas but he does a nice job as the narrator/common man.
I saw this more than a week ago and the songs are still reverberating in my head.
Bottom Line – Madonna is great here in the title role and I can understand how she could be nominated and win awards as Best Actress for this film. The songs are superb and really capture the feeling of the ever changing country during Peron’s life. Never been much of a fan of Banderas, but he does a nice job as the narrator/common man. The ability to keep this film 99% songs is a great one because the songs are descriptive enough to help tell a whole story along with the visuals and there isn’t much need for additional dialogue. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The vocals for the scene where Peron tells Eva that she’s dying had to be recorded live on set, as both Madonna and Jonathan Pryce kept breaking down in tears and could not keep in sync with the prerecorded tracks. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
