A Perfect Murder (1998)

perfect_murder_ver2 “I know what you’re worth Mrs. Taylor and that kind of money is always a motive, I took your case a part a thousand times, then I put it back together again, there was always one piece left out on the table like a screw that didn’t quite fit, the dead man had a wallet, cash and change, driver’s license even a membership card to a video store but not a single key, not one, not even to his apartment ” – Karaman

Number of Times Seen – 1 (24 Jul 2016)

Brief Synopsis – A man tries to plan the perfect murder of his wife in order to inherit her fortunes.

My Take on it – This is actually a movie that I never heard of before I saw Dial M for Murder (1954) last week and noticed that it was remade as this.

I loved the original and didn’t have much hopes that this would do the story justice, but I decided that with a cast like this, it was possible.

Michael Douglas, Gwyneth Paltrow and Viggo Mortensen all have a lot of potential here, but the relationships between the three just don’t feel real enough to believe.

This remake takes too much license with the original story and they change way too much of it which ultimately takes away a lot of the impact of the original.

This is yet another example of a movie that probably shouldn’t have been made because it takes an amazing movie and butchers it along the way.

We are living in an age where it’s quite easy to watch the original movies and there is less of a need to try and make a mediocre remake in order to try and modernize the story.

The cleverness of the orginal story is lost here and it really is quite a shame.. 😦

Bottom Line – Remake isn’t nearly as great as the original. They changed too much of the original story and it loses a lot of its impact because of it. Hard to believe the relationships between the characters. Sometimes, amazing movies should be left alone and not tainted by attempted remakes that turn things into mediocre.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Many of the artworks featured in this film are Mortensen’s own. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
