Rush Hour (1998)

rush hour“This is the LAPD. We’re the most hated cops in all the free world. My own mama’s ashamed of me. She tells everybody I’m a drug dealer. ” – Carter

Number of Times Seen – 2 (14 Jun 2001 and 28 Jul 2016)

Brief Synopsis – After a Chinese diplomat’s daughter is kidnapped in LA, a NYC detective is paired with her father’s trusted friend who is a Hong Kong Detective in order to find her.

My Take on it – This is a fun buddy-buddy cop movie but the main problem is the pairing of the two actors.

Jackie Chan knows what he’s doing and is able to aptly play a serious detective with a humorous undertone.  His fight scenes are amazingly choreographed and it’s so much fun watching him in action.

Chris Tucker tho seems too much out of his league here.

His portrayal feels too much like he is trying to imitate Axel Foley instead of trying to create his own character and that really is a shame.

The two characters should have better chemistry than they do and this movie suffers because of it.

I think that if they had cast someone else instead of Tucker, this film could have been a bigger hit and would have been more successful.

This is truly a pity because buddy-buddy cop movies quite often work much better than this one does.

Bottom Line – Fun movie, but doesn’t really add much to the whole buddy-buddy cop genre. Tucker feels like he is trying too hard to imitate Eddie Murphy in the Beverly Hills Cop series. But Chan is more than fit for the part. I didn’t really like the fact that the two have only a bit of chemistry.  Could have been so much better because the potential really is there.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When Lee shows Consul Han’s card to Carter, it reveals that the Consul’s first name is Solo. This is likely a subtle joke, seeing that in China, a person’s family name is often spoken or written preceding their individual name, meaning that the Consul’s traditional name is Han Solo. Han Solo is the name of one of the characters of Star Wars.  (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
