Number of Times Seen – 2 (Theater in ’97 and 7 Aug 2016)
Brief Synopsis – A professional thief witnesses a murder committed by the President of the United States and must try and figure out whether to keep the information secret of not especially when he becomes a suspect.
My Take on it – I became a fan of David Baldacci’s books quite early on in his career and read this book not long after it came out.
I was quite intrigued by both the subject matter and the way that the characters moved along throughout the story.
When I heard that Clint Eastwood was gonna make the movie and star as the main character, I was a bit confused because of his age, but then when I heard that two of the main characters would be merged into one, things made a bit more sense to me.
I really enjoy this adaptation despite not being perfect, but it really is able to capture the atmosphere of the book.
It’s quite interesting that this film (and book) were released during the 90’s when the Clinton scandals were happening daily on the news which says so much able public opinion of these matters at the time.
Eastwood is great here and he shows his age here while at the same time has his character seem quite wise as to how to keep ahead of teh game which works well.
Besides Eastwood, the cast is superb; Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, Laura Linney, Scott Glenn, Dennis Haysbert, Judy Davis, Richard Jenkins and E.G. Marshall are all amazing in their roles.
Bottom Line – Very interesting movie that does a fine job adapting the book despite merging two characters together. Eastwood does a good job of showing his age by having his character seem quite wise in the way of things in order to stay one step ahead of the law. Great cast helps make this feel even more powerful than it probably should. The timing of this film (and book) coming out during the Clinton Presidency says so much about the feeling of things during the 90’s. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Clint Eastwood’s extremely organized methods of directing led to filming being completed over three weeks ahead of schedule and $2-4 million under budget. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
