Wait Until Dark (1967)

wait until dark “I cannot negotiate in an atmosphere of mistrust. ” – Roat

Number of Times Seen – 1 (12 Aug 2016)

Brief Synopsis – Three criminals try to secretly find a doll filled with heroin that is located in an apartment where a young blind woman lives who doesn’t even know of the dolls existence.

Take on it – I can’t believe that I never saw this movie before!

The plot and story is such a brilliant idea and I enjoyed the entire thing from beginning to end.

The four main characters are all superb and it’s quite easy to believe that these characters are all potentially real.

Audrey Hepburn is amazing as the recent blind woman trying to figure out her own “senses”.

Alan Arkin, Richard Crenna and Jack Weston are all equally great as the three men trying to fool her while also trying to be inconspicuous.

The fact that nearly the entire movie takes place in one room is amazing.

The dialogue flows so well as the action is taking place (usually) just in the background of the room.

The climax really keeps you on the edge of your seat because the ping-pong action between the characters works so well.

Hepburn really deserved to get an Oscar and Globe nomination for this film because she really does a wonderful job making us believe her character’s ailment is truly real.

I really can’t wait to see this one again!

Bottom Line – All four main actors are great and we believe each of their characters as being real.  Hepburn is amazing as the leading lady while Arkin, Crenna and Weston are all perfect for their parts.  Loved the way the dialogue flowed along with the action and the idea itself is truly brilliant.  Still cant believe that I never saw this before and I can’t wait to see it again Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In an interview, Alan Arkin talked about the Oscar nominations he received for his early major film roles (The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming! (1966) and The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1968)). When asked if he was surprised that he was overlooked for “Wait Until Dark”, his second movie, he replied: “You don’t get nominated for being mean to Audrey Hepburn!” (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy

  1. This is a great a movie! Love Audrey Hepburn movies anyway, but this one works and I believe it started out as a stage play. That might account for why works so well in such a claustrophobic environment. Alan Arkin is very believable, and Richard Crenna is equally magnificent. Good movie, really good movie.
