Number of Times Seen – at least 3 times (Cable in the 90’s, 27 Feb 2002 and 27 Aug 2016)

Brief Synopsis – A clown and two accomplices rob a bank and must find a way to get out of New York City with the loot.

My Take on it – This is a great example of a modern day comedy of errors that keeps things going the whole time without the viewer getting bored of the jokes.

This film is able to walk the fine line between comedy and drama and works even better because of it.

Bill Murray does and amazing job here as the main character and I can really understand how many people believed a t the time that this was his best role.

He was able IMHO to surpass even this just three years later when he did Groundhog Day (1993) and proved even more so how great an actor he can be.

He was able to deliver the dead pan humor of the main character extremely well and gave us a chance to both see him as a serious actor in a semi-comedic role.

The supporting cast is superb and is filled with well known actors of the day and even some unknowns that now are quite familiar to us all.

Geena Davis, Randy Quaid, Jason Robards, Jamey Sheridan, Phil Hartman, Tony Shalhoub, Stanley Tucci, Philip Bosco and Kurtwood Smith are all really funny here.

The best supporting character here tho is New York City itself because this film really gives us an idea of what kind of city it is and can be both for good and for bad which ultimately gives it it’s unique character.

This is Bill Murray sole foray into directing and he was actually a co-director here with Howard Franklin who also wrote the screenplay.

Bottom Line – Murray is great here as the main character. Loved the comedy of errors that keep popping up during their city wide escape. Amazing supporting cast including some unknown actors at the time that now are quite familiar to one and all.  Murray delivers the dead pan humor of the main character so well that I can understand how many believed at the time that this was his best role. He was able to surpass it IMHO just 3 years later with Groundhog Day (1993). Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – While the idea of Bill Murray dressed as a clown in the bank heist comes from the original novel, the concept may have been inspired by famed bank robber Willie Sutton who was called “The Actor” because he would rob banks in a variety of costumes and disguises such as a police officer, construction worker, mailman, etc. (From IMDB)
