This is my 2473rd Review
Thanks to Eric of The IPC for this recommendation.
Here are his thoughts on the film.
Number of Times Seen – 1 (2 Sep 2016)
Brief Synopsis – On a space station in the future, the main crew members must deal with their isolation from the world and each does so in very different ways.
My Take on it – Whenever Eric suggest a movie, one needs to be quite cautious. 🙂
He loves weird movies and despite respecting one another a lot, we both have completely different goals when finding movies to watch.
That being said, Eric actually picked one fo my favorite movies from my Movies From The Hat Series II last year.
Cut Bank (2014) is still a new favorite of mine and I loved the way it was done.
So keeping all that in mind, I dove into Eric latest pick hoping to be pleasantly surprised again by a great undrerated film.
Unfortunately, that didn’t happen for me this time.
The movie itself moved along at a really slow pace and I was quite bored with what was going on most of teh time.
This might be considered a black comedy, but I didn’t find it too funny because most of the characters live pretty sad and lonely lives.
Each character felt very stereotypical on the one hand, but each had a twist which made things slightly more interesting.
The thing I did like about this film…ALOT! was the way it all had a real 70’s look and feel to it.
I was born in the mid-70’s, so I can say I remember much of the six years that I spent in that decade, but so much of it reminded me of pictures that I’ve seen in family albums whether dealing with clothes, hairstyles, wallpaper or even the way the sets were built here.
The equipment they used is all 70’s vintage which is pretty funny being that this takes place sometime in the future.
The 70’s throwback was great to watch, but I only wish the story would have been even better.
I can totally see how Eric could love this movie because it really has his name written all over it and despite not laughing very much, I can imagine him laughing the whole time by the outrageousness of it all.
Bottom Line – The story here is quite slow and brooding and doesn’t really move along at an good pace. The actors all seem to be playing stereotypical characters with a twist. I really liked the 70’s throwback of it all because it resonates with all things 70’s throughout despite taking place in the future.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The shuttle to take Steve and Donna to Space Station 8 is operated by Koenig Shipping. This is likely a homage to Walter Koenig, better known as Pavel Chekov, the pilot and engineer in the Star Trek series, or a nod to Commander John Koenig from Space: 1999, which this movie shares similarities with. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
