2500th Review!!!! Movies From the Hat IV #41 – Dan’s Pick – Under the Skin (2013)

This is my 2500th Review

Thanks to Dan of Slipthrough Movies for this recommendation.

Here are his thoughts on the film.

under-the-skin-poster“Because it’s… It’s nowhere. ” – Camper

Number of Times Seen – 1 (11 Sep 2016)

Brief Synopsis – A woman travels around Scotland luring unsuspecting men into her van where she then gets them to enter a mysterious black void.

My Take on it – I knew that there was a reason that I have avoided this film for 3 years and it’s because I knew that it was not the kind of movie I would enjoy.

Boy was I right!!

The plot of the film is quite flimsy and there was no character development at all.

I was actually bored by the tediousness of it all because I was expecting something interesting to happen and it just wasn’t happening at all.

Yes, I’m willing to concede that the visuals here were nice, but I need more than visuals to enjoy a movie; I need an engaging story and this film just doesn’t deliver.

This film lacked an anchor for the story to flow and I was so tempted to turn it off so many times because I was bored.

I’m aware of the fact that this film was on a lot of people’s top ten lists for 2013 and in many instances even #1, but to me this was a complete waste of time. (sorry Dan, at least I’m now glad that I can say Ive seen it and that it’s now all behind me) 🙂

At least I can now say that I ended this series with a BANG!!

Bottom Line – Definitely not the kind of movie I generally enjoy. The plot seems non existent and there is no character development at all. The visuals may be nice to look at, but without a cohesive story as an anchor, this film totally bored me.  I know that many people loved this film and it topped many lists as the best film of the year, but to me it was completely incomprehensible.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The first proper line of dialogue happens 13 minutes into the film.  (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy

  1. Congrats on the milestone, Rob! 2500 reviews is an impressive feat. Here’s to 2500 more. *raises glass*

I’ve heard mixed feelings on this movie so I haven’t really had the drive to see it. Sounds like I’m not missing a whole lot.

  2. I’m in the same boat. As good as everyone (else) says this movie is, it just doesn’t look interesting to me in the slightest. I’ll skip it.
Congrats on the milestone! You must have hit some kind of world record by now, right?

  4. Glad you gave the movie a chance. I told you it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. I’m super nerdy when it comes to movies (from liking b-movies to liking the internal deconstruction and poetic side of the artform *cough* Terrence Mallick). For me, this movie had so much going on “Under the Skin” . I was never bored because I was trying to figure out what was going on. I love when a movie doesn’t force its story on you. The visuals are great, as is the atmosphere and score, but the performances, themes, and introspection it encourages are all astounding… To this nerd at least hehehe. Let me push up my massively heavy glasses. 😉 That said, sometimes we want pure entertainment. Congrats on the milestone, Rob!
