Number of Times Seen – 1 (25 Sep 2016)

Brief Synopsis – A mysterious new villain appears in Gotham intent on taking control of the criminal element.

My Take on it – This has been on my list for a while, but my good friend Diego, implored that I watch this because he saw how much I’ve been enjoying the series of WB/DC films that he wanted me to watch his favorite.

I obviously acquiesced and liked this one a lot. It’s not my favorite among the series, but it was amazing to watch.

One of the advantages of not having read the comic, I had no clue what to expect and was surprised as things kept getting more and more interesting along the way.

The story itself is quite engaging both before and (even moreso) after we learn the big reveal.

I love how the stories are able to get so dark because it adds so many levels to the enjoyment of the superhero genre.

As much as I loved the campyness of the Batman TV show in the 60’s, these darker portrayals of the Dark Knight are much more interesting to absorb.

The fact that each of these movies are stand alone stories also adds to the intrigue because you never know what will happen to any of the characters because they only exist in this story and can be disposed of if needed or kept alive with the pain and suffering of all that has happened.

Superhero stories are not pure camp and they can be complex, dark, disturbing, dangerous and above all interesting if done correctly and this movie is further proof of that!

Bottom Line – Another great DC/WB animated film. Not having read the comic, I didn’t know what to expect and it was a great story because it was so engaging. I’m really starting to love the dark aspects of these films. It may be a stand alone story, but it really shows how complex, dark, dangerous and interesting the superhero world can really be.  Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In every flashback showing Batman, the costume has minor differences (like the yellow chest symbol, and older utility belt style) which is consistent with the fact that Batman does update his equipment and costume as he regularly fights for justice. (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy

  1. This is what I would’ve wanted the new Batman stand alone to be about. It’s perfect with the second Robin being dead as well. BUT I’m up for all things Batman related and I trust Affleck.
