Criminal (2016)

Brief Synopsis – After a government agent is killed during a mission, his memories are implanted in a dangerous criminal who is expected to finish the mission.

My Take on it – This is a movie that I hadn’t heard many good things about and wasn’t too interested in seeing it until I saw that it was rated quite high by a movie reviewer who I highly admire.

That clinched it for me and I went into this with a positive attitude despite not being the biggest fan of most recent Kevin Costner movies.

I really liked the way that they forged this story.

On the surface, this film seems like a typical action thriller with a sci-fi twist to it, but this film is even more than that.

It basically asks the question of what makes us us?  is it our body? our thoughts? our mind? our wants? our needs? or how we act?

Costner definitely wouldn’t have been my initial choice for a role like this because it is so different from what he usually does, but it surprisingly actually works well for him here.

The action is wall to wall here and doesn’t slow down for a second as things go along.

The supporting cast of Tommy Lee Jones, Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds, Alice Eve and Gary Oldman is perfectly cast and they each add so much to the way the story is told and keep things interesting the whole way through.

Bottom Line – Loved the way they did this.  The action is done extremely well and the science seems plausible in the near future.  Costner wouldn’t have been my first choice, but he really was great here because you wouldn’t expect it from him. Really enjoyed the way that they weave together the action with the ultimate question of what makes us us?  Excellent supporting cast helps keep this one interesting throughout. Recommended!
