Number of Times Seen – 1 (1 Nov 2016)
Brief Synopsis – Biopic of the political life of the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan and his rise to power.
My Take on it – Being a fan of American History and of the Presidency in particular, I have been meaning to watch this biopic of Reagan for quite some time and was glad to finally get the chance.
They do a wonderful job of giving us a perspective of Reagan’s rise through political life despite the fact that they make him seem like too much of a puppet part of the time.
Over the last few weeks, this is the third film portrayal that I’ve seen of Reagan and James Brolin is by far the best of the three, he sounds, acts and especially important looks like the former President.
JUdy Davis is also great here as Nancy Reagan and is shown like numerous other well-known First Ladies to help manuever her husband to a power position.
I can definitely understand how this film can be considered one of the most controversial one ever made because of some of the ways that important events in Reagan’s life are portrayed.
Reagan’s story is truly a rich and interesting one and three hours isn’t nearly enough to do it justice, unfortunately tho, toward the mid part of the final hour, things feel a bit too drawn out but that’s a bit understandable due to the momentum of it all.
Bottom Line -Great portrayal of the life of Reagan. Brolin and Davis are both superb here. Easy to see why this movie is among one of the most controversial ever. Gets a bit drawn out towards the end, but even at 180 minutes, this film feels incomplete. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This movie has been disavowed by many who worked with and knew President Reagan, even his estranged daughter Patti Davis, arguing that the movie depicts a caricatured Reagan that never existed. Davis took particular exception to the movie’s line “Those who live in sin shall die in sin”, saying that her father never said such a thing. Furthermore, the release of The Reagan Diaries revealed a much deeper Reagan than what his critics had alleged. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
