“The only person standing in your way is you. ” – Thomas Leroy
Number of Times Seen – 2 (21 Dec 2010 and 21 Nov 2016)
Brief Synopsis – A talented ballet dancer who needs to prove to herself that she is the best must deal with her own inner demons after she is given a challenging lead part in Swan Lake.
My Take on it – I have never been a fan of Darren Aronofsky’s films because I can never really understand them.
They are usually told in a very incoherent way and this film is no exception to that rule.
I do realize that this film is meant as a metaphor about getting the best out of yourself but I truly wish that it would have been told in a straightforward way like Aronofsky’s amazing The Wrestler (2008). (Which remains the sole movie on his resume that I actually enjoyed immensely.)
Despite this film being a complete mess from a narrative perspective, Natalie Portman is hauntingly superb in the lead role.
Portman is great in just about everything she does, so it isnt really much of a surprise that she gives a excellent performance here and even won the Oscar for Best Actress.
This film IMHO is just a complete waste of time.
Bottom Line – Another completely incoherent Aronofsky film. I understsnd that much of it is meant to be a metaphor but why can’t he just tell a straight story like he did in The Wrestler (2008). Despite the craziness of the narrative, Portman is hauntingly great in the lead role. Unfortunately tho, this film as a whole is a complete waste of time.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Director Darren Aronofsky originally envisioned telling this story as part of the plot of The Wrestler (2008) and was actually developing a project that was about a love affair between a ballet dancer and a wrestler, but he realized pretty quickly that taking two worlds like wrestling and ballet was much too much for one movie. (From IMDB)
Rating – Razzie Worthy
