Florence Foster Jenkins (2016)

ffj“People may say I couldn’t sing, but no one can ever say I didn’t sing. ” – Florence Foster Jenkins

Number of Times Seen – 1 (24 Nov 2016)

Brief Synopsis – Biographical story of a rich New York socialite who dreamed of being an opera singer despite not being able to sing properly.

My Take on it – This is a film that loses part of its impact because it has trouble deciding whether it wants to be a comedy or a drama.

Meryl Streep knows how to pick meaty eccentric roles and she chose a doozy here because her character is so great and fun to watch especially when she (tries to) sing.

Hugh Grant is also excellent as her manager/husband who does all he can to try and protect her pride and social status.

The problem lies in the chemistry between the two of them which is quite lacking.

Bottom Line – Grant and Streep are both great here each on their own but the chemistry between the two of them is somewhat lacking. This film suffers a bit because it doesn’t make a choice of whether it wants to be a comedy or a drama. Streep truly knows how to pick fun roles tho and is a riot to watch (especially when she sings) Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Hugh Grant had semi-retired when director Stephen Frears convinced him to star in this film. Grant said he participated in the film to act opposite Meryl Streep. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy

  1. Hmm, I don’t know man. The dynamic between Grant and Streep was what sold this to me. And of course, Streep herself. Such a whimsical little film. Lightweight and sort of disposable but a good one.
