Number of Times Seen – 1 (4 Dec 2016)
Brief Synopsis – A mild mannered accountant with a knack for numbers who works for unsavory clients has the Treasury Department closing in on him.
My Take on it – This film is one that I recall was hyped at the beginning of the year as one of the best and I recall there was talk about Ben Affleck being considered for lots of awards for his role here.
Basically, this film feels like a Rain Man action flick which isn’t as compelling as one would hope.
The story itself is good, but too many aspects were easily predictable and sometimes bordered on silly.
Affleck himself seems completely miscast here and it was really hard to believe the role and I even laughed a few times at the absurdity of some of it.
The rest of the cast is quite competent here, but the standouts are JK Simmons and Anna Kendrick because they make their characters feel more real and tangible.
The problem here is the fact that they tried to make this both a compelling drama and an action film at the same time.
They should have stuck to the drama parts of it and left the action on the side because that’s the area where this films works much better.
Bottom Line – Feels like an action flick starring Rain Man. The story is good, but too much is predictable along the way. Cast is quite competent, but it’s hard to believe Affleck in this role. Simmons and Kendrick’s characters feel more realistic. This could have been much better had it not turned in to a revenge flick.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In the hotel room, Dana (Anna Kendrick) reveals that in order to get the money to buy a gown, she taught herself how to play blackjack and to count cards to determine the chance to win a hand. In real life, Ben Affleck is known to be a poker and blackjack card player that he was barred from several casinos not because he cheats but of his well known habit of card counting – legit but too much for them. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
