Calvin Coolidge: Our American Journey (1998)

coolidge“Calvin Coolidge gave his first state of the union in person. He made thirty identifiable requests to congress in that address and this is a President who is sometimes viewed as a passive, non-involved President.” – Bob Gilbert

Brief Synopsis – Biography of the 30th President of the US, Calvin Coolidge

My Take on it – As a fan of the US Presidency, I was so happy to find this film.

Ever since my childhood, I have always been enamored by “Silent Cal” who was the only President born on Independence Day, July 4th.

His wit and dry humor are unmatched by any of his predecessors or successors.

As a kid, I use to read an article published every year on his birthday with famous quotes from him and saved copies for numerous years.

This film was so interesting because it added even more information to my knowledge of his life.

His life was filled with much tragedy yet also with numerous triumphs that no one ever expected would amount to much.

The interviews on this film include many prominent historians and even his surviving son which gives us an amazing connection to this long forgotten yet witty President.

Bottom Line – Found this film so interesting because I got to learn much more about one of my favorite Presidents.  The tragedies and triumphs of his life are discussed by prominent historians and even his surviving son which gives us a spectacular bridge to this great man’s life. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – As the U.S. vice president, Coolidge and his vivacious wife Grace were invited to quite a few parties, where the legend of “Silent Cal” was born. It is from this time that most of the jokes and anecdotes involving Coolidge originate. Although Coolidge was known to be a skilled and effective public speaker, in private he was a man of few words and was commonly referred to as “Silent Cal”. A possibly apocryphal story has it a matron, seated next to him at a dinner, said to him, “I made a bet today that I could get more than two words out of you.” He replied, “You lose.” (From Wikipedia)
