Did They Get it Right? – Best Picture – Oscars 2001

dtgirbp-2001

Here are the five nominees: (Winner in Bold)

A Beautiful Mind
Gosford Park
In the Bedroom
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Moulin Rouge!

Biggest Snub:

Black Hawk Down

My Overall Thoughts:

This was another great year of choices and the best movie unfortunately was perceived as a film without an real ending, so it was passed over for a film which gave way for the Academy to reward Ron Howard for a previous loss six years earlier.

Two of the other three nominees were worthy of getting nominations but not a win and the final one was a musical mess IMHO that was nominated for sentiment instead of the fact that it really deserved it.

My Rankings:

Movies

  • 5. – Moulin Rouge! – Crazy musical that gets so annoying because it tries too hard to look fantastic.  Unfortunately, the story just doesn’t flow as well as it should
  • 4. – In the Bedroom – Excellent film that asks so many questions about morality, right and wrong and what sometimes must be done to try and make things right.
  • 3. – Gosford Park – Great Altman film that deals with so many characters in such a unique way that we get to know them all and at the same time stay interested in what they have to say and do.
  • 2. – A Beautiful Mind – Great study of a brilliant man who lived in his own world until he found a way to find connections.  Crowe is great here and Howard does an amazing job directing this biopic.
  • 1. – The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring – Jackson introduced us to an amazing visual world with amazing characters on an important journey.  Excellent story and technical aspects make this clearly the best film of the year. Unfortunately, many people didn’t like the fact that the story doesn’ t end when the credits begin to role.

Do I agree with the Oscar winner? –  Yes and No! – ABM is a very good and thorough film but overall it isn’t better than LOTR:FOTR.  The fact that the Academy members in general stayed away from rewarding a film in the Fantasy genre also played into this decision.

Let me know what you think about these films and my rankings!

  1. Another fantastic article. I love this series. I agree with the Black Hawk Down snub. I rather liked Moulin Rouge though. I really liked In the Bedroom too. Beautiful Mind was good but not Oscar good. I felt it was a little melodramatic at times. For me, I never really enjoyed the LOTR films as much as everyone else. However, I understand the appeal. It IS fantasy done right! That’s why I love these articles – the chance to see what you dig. Top 10 type lists are always tons of movie nerd fun. Thanks again, Rob!
