In my attempt to have a more prolific repertoire of Oscar Nominated Films, I have taken it upon myself to watch 89 new Best Picture Nominees that I’ve never seen before between 1 Dec 2016 and The 89th Annual Oscars on 26 Feb 2017.
Here is my 20th review of the 89 chosen Films…
“My idea has always been that if we could bring the mothers of the various nations together, then there would be no more war. ” – Ruth
Number of Times Seen – 1 (18 Dec 2016)
Brief Synopsis – The interactions between numerous members of British society on different class levels during the early days of the 1900’s.
My Take on it – This film is a very good analogy of the class structure in England and the changes made during the early part of the 1900’s.
The characters are all well developed and it’s easy to understand where each of them stands on the levels of society.
Amazing cast led by Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson make this even more enjoyable.
The story itself is a bit meandering and probably comes off much better in narrative form instead of visually.
The romance depicted isn’t really a passionate one, but that may actually be part of the point here.
Regardless, the story can be interesting and enjoyable as we watch the class struggles evolve over the course of the film.
Thompson deservingly won an Oscar for Best Actress for this role.
Bottom Line – Great analogy of how the British class structure worked a hundred years ago. Excellent cast led by Hopkins and Thompson. Thompson deservingly won an Oscar for Best Actress for this interesting role. Probably easier to comprehend in book form than visually on screen, but still enjoyable. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Emma Thompson received a total of 13 nominations in many awards for her role in this movie. She won in all of those events, which includes an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA as Best Actress. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
