The Magnificent Seven (2016)

magni7“If God didn’t want them to be sheared, he wouldn’t have made them sheep.” – Bartholomew Bogue

Number of Times Seen – 1 (15 Dec 2016)

Brief Synopsis – A town terrorized by bandits, hires seven gunmen to help save their village.

My Take on it – This is yet another example of Hollywood trying to “cash in” on a film that worked before and trying to remake it.

They once again do a mediocre job of this.

The original film from 1960 and the Kurosawa film that inspired the idea, The Seven Samurai (1954) are both so much better than this one in their tone and storytelling.

This film just tries too hard to be unique and it loses interest because in doing so, it just gets tiresome and overbearing.

The cast is great, but since they don’t have enough to work with, they all seem wasted.

Denzel Washington is yet again boring and emotionless here and lacks any feelings of exuberance to everything he does.

There are some nice gunfights here and that in and of itself makes it worth watching, but don’t expect much else from this pretty much average remake.

Bottom Line – Once again, a mediocre remake of a film that didn’t need to be remade. Great cast is overburdened by a plot that tries too hard to be unique but ends up just getting tiresome. Washington is his boring regular self in this film and doesn’t add enough to the thrills.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The joke “So Far So Good” told by Chris Pratt’s character was also told by Steve McQueen’s character in the The Magnificent Seven (1960). (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy

  1. I agree with your review. What a pity. I had hoped for something great. I found myself not caring who made it and who didn’t by the end. In the Yul Brynner version I wanted each and every one of the seven to make it out. This latest remake hinted at developing characters but never did. The shootouts were great as was the soundtrack.
